Three heavily corroded, bug-infested WiiMote controllers pulled from an e-waste box became the raw material for one working unit. Builder eWastelander documented the full salvage process on YouTube, starting with neutralizing alkaline battery acid, deep-cleaning disassembled parts, and then diagnosing damage across at least two different PCB hardware revisions found across the three units.
The hardest problem was a board where corrosion had physically knocked an IC loose from its pads. The teardown and cross-revision parts-swapping process is where the real value of this video lives. Watching someone triage incompatible hardware generations while managing contaminated components is a more honest repair education than any clean-bench tutorial.
One working WiiMote came out the other side. The two remaining shells are candidates for an OpenMote conversion, which swaps the original internals for an ESP32-S3 board to repurpose the familiar form factor for general home automation tasks. That secondary path, gutting salvaged consumer hardware for new embedded projects, is worth following up on its own.
