EmuTOS, the open-source Atari TOS replacement, now runs on a Sega Mega CD. Developer 1d4r3k published the port to GitHub, making it deployable by burning an ISO or flashing a cartridge on original hardware.
Current support includes a serial keyboard, printer output, audio, and filesystem mounting from CD, cartridge, RAMdisk, internal backup RAM, and cartridge save RAM. A GEOS port is also in progress, which would bring the full GEOS software suite to the platform. The Mega CD's Motorola 68000 CPU shares its architecture with the Atari ST line, which is exactly why this works at all.
No screenshots exist yet, so the actual desktop experience remains unverified. What makes the full project worth reading is the technical detail on how EmuTOS was adapted for Mega CD memory mapping and the implication that a functioning GUI productivity environment could run on a 1991 game console add-on. The GEOS development thread is the one to watch.
