A maker called Prohurtz has built BSB-SLAM, a DIY inside-out tracking mod for the Bigscreen Beyond VR headset that eliminates the need for external base stations entirely. The hardware is an Xvisio XR50 SLAM sensor board mounted to the front of the headset via a 3D-printed adapter and a USB cable. Custom software routes the sensor's positioning data as a replacement for base station input, giving the headset full 3D spatial tracking with no room setup required.

The Beyond is still a tethered PC display, that has not changed. What has changed is portability: the headset can now operate in any space without pre-installed Lighthouse infrastructure. Prohurtz first got a working proof of concept running in 2025, and the project has matured to the point where the parts list is short, the mount is printable, and the software stack is available on GitHub.

The argument worth reading in the full project writeup is not just that this works, but how readily it came together. A commercial SLAM sensor capable of near-real-time 6DoF tracking, bought off the shelf, adapted with printed plastic and a software shim. Prohurtz previously shipped EyeTrackVR, a DIY eye-tracking add-on using similar off-the-shelf assembly logic. The pattern here is the more interesting story.
