A Game Boy Color with a busted screen now lives inside a Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Lil' Gamer toy, and it runs Pokemon. Builder KOUZEX transplanted the GBC mainboard into the child's toy shell, soldering wires between Nintendo's PCB and the toy's PCB to revive the original buttons and speaker. A blown fuse mid-build forced a strip of non-essential components from the toy's board, but the core electronics survived intact.
The constraint that makes this interesting is self-imposed: KOUZEX refused to treat the toy shell as a simple replacement case. The original button layout, the sliding side blocks, the chunky proportions, all preserved. Select and Start had no analog in the Fisher Price original and required custom solutions. The replacement OLED screen is notably larger than the stock GBC display and, by accident of the toy's oversized design, fits without looking wrong.
