Blizzard is reviving StarCraft as an open-world shooter, targeting a 2030 release. VP Dan Hay announced the title at BlizzCon, dropping the franchise's defining top-down RTS format entirely. The game is simply called StarCraft.

This is the second attempt. The first, StarCraft: Ghost, entered development in 2002 and was officially canceled in 2014 by then-president Mike Morhaime after years in limbo. Blizzard is betting the same universe works in a genre that killed the last project.

The cinematic trailer shown at BlizzCon is where the full piece earns its read. The genre shift, the creative framing, and what Blizzard is actually promising for a game still four years out are details that don't survive a headline.
