Snap's new Specs AR glasses cost $2,195 and represent the current ceiling of consumer AR hardware: no VR-style bulk, no charging puck, and years of Snapchat lens development baked in at launch.
The problem is visible in every product photo. CEO Evan Spiegel wears them with the heavy stems visibly crushing his ears. Models and athletes are posed to conceal the weight. The hardware is technically ahead of the competition and aesthetically disqualifying at the same time.
The tension here is worth reading through: Snap may have won the spec sheet race while losing the one that matters most. Whether that tradeoff holds as the category matures, and who blinks first on form factor, is the real story inside.
