Microsoft cut Surface prices by dropping RAM in half. The new 12-inch Surface Pro starts at $849 and the 13-inch Surface Laptop at $949, both shipping with 8GB of RAM instead of the 16GB that defined their original 2025 base configurations.

The pricing history here is the real story. These same devices launched in 2025 at $799 and $899 with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Microsoft then raised those prices to $1,049 and $1,199 in April 2026. The new 8GB models are not a discount. They are a repackaged response to a memory cost problem Microsoft created for its own customers.
