OpenAI's GPT 5.6 is now available on Vercel's AI Gateway in limited preview across three variants: Sol (flagship), Terra (balanced, half the cost of the previous generation), and Luna (fastest, lowest cost in the series). All three show improved performance on agentic tasks in coding, biology, and cybersecurity, with better token efficiency than the prior generation.
The integration is worth reading in detail for two reasons. First, Vercel's routing rules let you switch to GPT 5.6 from other gateway models without code changes, which is a meaningful operational lever. Second, AI Gateway passes through provider pricing with no markup and no platform fee, including on Bring Your Own Key requests, which changes the cost calculus for teams running high inference volumes.
AI Gateway also bundles custom reporting, Zero Data Retention support, per-key budgets, failover, and retry logic under a single API. The model playground for GPT 5.6 Sol is live now. The full changelog has the implementation details and slug references for all three models.
