A £2,000 Amprobe AT-7000-EUR cable tracer stopped powering on after years of storage. Fluke's service department quoted £600 just to attempt a repair, after charging £70 for the estimate alone. The owner sent it to YouTube channel Buy it Fix it instead.
The diagnostic path is what makes this repair worth reading. A serial port on the SoC revealed boot log output showing the 128 MB TSOP-48 NAND Flash was failing its image validation check. Desoldering the Flash and dumping it produced data that looked intact at first glance. A detour using Google's Gemini for analysis wasted significant time and produced nothing useful. The actual breakthrough came from comparing the dead unit's Flash dump against a dump pulled from the working receiver unit in the same kit, which revealed a small number of flipped bits in the bootloader section, consistent with charge leakage in aging Flash cells.
Reflashing the generator with a corrected image restored the Linux 2.6-based firmware and full operation. The repair cost a fraction of Fluke's £600 floor.
