A maker called 'Someone Should Make That' machined an adjustable wrench that borrows its core mechanism from CNC anti-backlash systems. The fix targets a specific failure mode: mechanical slop in standard adjustable wrenches that causes rounded bolt heads. The solution is spring-loaded tension on the adjustment screw, the same principle used in anti-backlash nuts on CNC mills and 3D printer ball screws.
It took multiple design iterations before the mechanism worked. The wrench was prototyped in plastic before CNC machining, and the final adjustment screw remained plastic in the finished tool. Whether that screw survives real shop use long-term is an open question the video does not answer. The build also includes practical CNC tips aimed at beginners, making the full watch worth the time even if you never plan to machine your own wrench.
This is not the first adjustable wrench redesign to surface on Hackaday. The previous notable entry was a shifting ratchet wrench from August 2025. What separates this one is the direct mechanical logic borrowed from precision motion control, applied to a hand tool that has not changed meaningfully in over a century.
