Indian scientists at the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre (SGBC) have published the most detailed brainstem map ever produced, using three human samples spanning 45 weeks fetal, 9 years, and 54 years of age. The brainstem controls breathing, heart rate, and consciousness. Millimeter-scale damage to it can kill. We still do not fully understand how it works.

The team avoided expensive imaging-only methods. Instead, they combined MRI, Block Face Imaging, and high-resolution microscopy, slicing tissue into sections as thin as 20 to 40 micrometers, annotating each slice with in-house software, and assembling the results into a browser-explorable 3D model. The preprint, posted to bioRxiv in June 2026, is not yet peer reviewed. That caveat matters, but the methodology and the public-facing interactive map at anchor.humanbrain.in are worth examining regardless.

The dataset creates a structural baseline that neurological research has lacked. Conditions including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's involve brainstem pathology that remains poorly characterized at this resolution.
